History

Formed in January 2010 with public support from Transport Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Great Glen Shipping Company initially started transporting timber up and down the Caledonian Canal removing thousands of lorry miles from the Highlands fragile road network.

Initially born out of an academic study by Liam Browning of Newcastle University, the project looked at examining transport on inland waterways throughout the UK.

Great Glen Shipping Company was born and operated a vessel, the MV Kanutta, to transport timber from Loch Etive, near Oban, to Inverness via Loch Linnhe and the Caledonian Canal.

In the summer of 2011, GGSC purchased two coastal vessels, the MV Burhou I and MV Isis to transport timber and other bulk cargoes throughout the West Coast of Scotland and further afield.  The ethos of Great Glen Shipping has and always will remain the same, to provide a vital logistics link to the Highlands and Islands with a core focus of removing lorry traffic from the Highlands road network.

2014 saw the introduction of the CEG Cosmos to our fleet, a high cubic capacity box hold vessel.

2018 was a busy year for us, we sold our ladies MV Burhou I & MV Isis and replaced them with the CEG Universe (Ex Dan Fighter) & CEG Galaxy (Ex Frifjord).
